Interview with National Cyber Awards Volunteer of the year 2020

We are delighted to announce that one of our RAF STEM Ambassadors, Flt Lt Luke, was awarded the National Cyber Awards Volunteer of the year for 2020. We caught up with Luke after the virtual ceremony to find out more.

The RAF Museum’s writer in residence – children’s author Tom Palmer – has collaborated with the RAF Youth and STEM Team to write two short stories set in the Second World War. Based around famous inventions and their innovators during the wartime period, both stories are accompanied by STEM activities written by the RAF Museum. Miss Shilling’s Guide to Problem Solving looks at the ground breaking technology invented by Miss Shilling during WWII. Not only was Miss Shilling a pioneer for women in engineering, but her invention transformed the capability of the Merlin engine and was a significant contribution to the Spitfire pilot’s air domination during the campaign. The STEM activities will allow students to recreate a 3D paper model of a Spitfire and the Merlin engine.

This Letter looks at how pilots communicated to each other and then shows students how to replicate the technology of a Gosport tube using cups and string. The maths activity challenges student knowledge of Speed, Time and Distance calculations to look at some of the Spitfire’s capability.
